Take a look at 2008/2009

By: Robert Tinning, 2008-2009 AAGD President
Take a look at 2008/2009
As we begin AAGD’s new operating year, I want to give you an overview of the next twelve months – which promise to be very active, busy and exciting for AAGD members.
Let’s begin the overview with AAGD’s 2008 Membership Drive, which kicks off September 1.
2008 AAGD Fall Membership Campaign
AAGD Treasure Quest…The Search for New Members
We are excited to announce the 2008 Fall Membership Campaign… AAGD Treasure Quest… The Search for New Members. The 2008 AAGD Fall Membership Campaign will start September 1, 2008 and will continue through November 30, 2008. Our goal is to bring in 125 new members during our 90 day Campaign. I am personally challenging the Membership Committee to beat the record we set when I chaired the Committee in September 2001.
Our annual Membership Campaign is focused on the Association’s volunteers putting forth extra effort to recruit new members. This is the most exciting time to recruit because of the opportunity to win cash prizes. In September, volunteers divide into teams of three to compete against each other until the end of November.
Recruiting during a campaign will be an excellent opportunity to network and demonstrate your support for the Association while earning great prizes. You are helping to strengthen your Association with the influx of new members and new involvement. Meetings provide an opportunity to talk with your peers and develop lasting personal and business relationships.
The Membership Department can assist with your efforts by providing you with the names of companies who have contacted the AAGD office and have expressed interest in joining the association.
For more information on recruiting for the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas, contact Gene Kriska, Director of Member Services or Bradley Elliott, Member Services Coordinator at 972.385.9091.
This is YOUR opportunity to make a long-lasting impression. By volunteering a few hours a week, the rewards will be lots of fun, opportunities for socializing, and GREAT PRIZES. You won't regret being a 2008 AAGD Campaign Volunteer.
Are you an active member and want to 'link" other companies you know to AAGD? Make a connection and bring new and prospective members to the Orientation Meeting - September 11, 2:45 P.M. at the AAGD office and introduce them to the AAGD network.
The 2008 Membership Campaign will be under the direction of:
Jeff Hoster
Pinnacle
2008-2009 Membership Chairperson
Emily Watson
McDowell Properties
2008 Membership Campaign Co-Chairperson
Mike Follis
Apartment Finder Magazine
2008 Membership Campaign Co-Chairperson.
Why become involved?
Most of AAGD's members say they want to give something back to the multi-housing industry, which has been good to them. Getting involved this year with the 2008 Membership Campaign would be a great beginning. What will serving on a team mean? A little work, a lot of fun and a great chance to make a difference in the future of the Association!
You have the opportunity to network and meet other people in the industry as well as the opportunity to be "on the inside" and know more about this exciting industry we call multifamily.
Recognition: This is an excellent opportunity to earn recognition in front of your peers and customers and have fun!
Celebrating 49 years of excellence
2008 marks the 49th year of the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas. AAGD has made a difference, and with the support of the companies involved in our industry, will continue to enhance our industry as a whole in the future.

Watch your mail for the new Apartment

For vendors, the annual amount is $350 prepaid or $30 a month. Now, where else can you get this amount and quality of training for such a great price? Any and all employees of an enrolled property or supplier company can attend any and all Academy programs. Those not enrolled in the Academy may attend seminars individually at the published price per seminar.

AAGD now offering…. On-Line Learning!
We have made it easier for those who want to take a class from home or from the office. These interactive online courses are designed to last about an hour, and you can go at your own pace. Watch Rooflines for the classes offered, and how to enroll.
Community Service Committee
AAGD’s award-winning and nationally recognized Community Service Committee is co-chaired this year by Mark Frazier and Jim Goodman (FTK Renovations). Community Service projects have been a very important part of AAGD’s image in the Greater Dallas community. Having just completed the rehab of the exterior of the three houses for Reconciliation Outreach, the Committee will be hard at work again in 08/09. AAGD members will have multiple opportunities to participate and to utilize their interests and strengths. Watch for the special announcement of this year’s project!
Legislative Committee
AAGD’s 2008/2009 Legislative Committee Chair, Alan King (Berkshire Property Advisors) and Vice Chair, Kin Oldham (Greystar), will have numerous issues to deal with this year.
It seems the suburban cities, like Irving, Mesquite, and many others, are continuing to target the apartment industry with more regulations and costs and the committee will be focusing on identifying and resolving these trends in a positive manner.
AAGD will continue to monitor the lawsuit involving the City of Farmers Branch as it moves through the legal system and will be on the forefront of any immigration issues that arise in other cities. Also, we have seen a number of cities adopt a “crime free” initiative. We are working with local police departments on the implementation of these programs to ensure they do not stray from the original intent or become a burden to property owners.
Special Events Committee
Tommy Dodd (Dodd Creative) and Gary Mann (Stonehill-PRM Realty) will co-chair AAGD’s Special Events Committee for the new year. This group is already planning the AAGD Fall Golf Classic, set for September 19 at Bear Creek Golf Club. Our Annual AAGD PAC Events Auction will be held February 26, 2009 . The event will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental.
Products and Services Council
Nikki Jorski (Apartment Home Living) was installed in June as 2008/2009 P & S Chairperson, also installed, AAGD’s P & S Executive Committee. This group is already gearing up for AAGD’s 2009 Trade Show to be held March 18 at Dallas Market Hall. By the way, the Show is already 60% sold. Have you reserved your booth?
The Irving Satellite
The Irving Satellite will be changing format and focus this year. The group will hold its lunch meeting at Spring Creek Barbecue (Hwy. 183) in a more casual setting. The topics will cover a range of city functions, as Irving Satellite members seek to increase their presence and influence in the city.
The Denton Satellite
Denton Satellite members meet for lunch at the El Guapo’s (South Elm St.) in Denton. The group is very interested in development issues in the city and how to co-exist with the University of North Texas, who is also a huge provider of student housing. Kathy Carlton is the staff liaison and may be contacted for additional information.
AAGD IROC
AAGD’s Independent Rental Owners Council, chaired this year by Tod Franklin (DFW City Homes) will showcase five IROC Luncheons scheduled during the year – which will feature speakers on industry related topics designed specifically for AAGD’s independent owners. Here’s a list of the scheduled IROC Luncheon dates. The luncheons are all held at 11:30 A.M.

Information Services & Technology Committee
John Cullens (ApartmentCareers.com) will chair AAGD’s Information Services and Technology Committee. The Committee is responsible for the overall review and monitoring of AAGD’s technology, computer equipment, hardware and software related issues. The Committee provides input into all electronic communication vehicles including the AAGD website and email broadcasts.
Hispanic Task Force
Serving as Chair for the Hispanic Task Force, Kimberly Scott (Capture the Market, Inc.). Once again, AAGD will be reaching out to the Hispanic Community in the Metroplex. The Hispanic Community makes up more than half of our resident base and an increasing percentage of our industry’s employment base. This year, AAGD will join with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and other organizations to learn better ways to address the Hispanic market. Additionally, we will in turn learn how to market our product better to this group to let them know that an AAGD property is the only place to live. We will work with this group through employment and education programs, and most importantly, we will use our joint strength to battle regulatory and legislative initiatives that so often impact Hispanic residents disproportionately.
